What is laser cladding?

In laser cladding, a coating is welded onto a workpiece with a laser beam. A weld pool is created on a workpiece surface with a precisely focused laser beam. Powdered filler metal is simultaneously injected into the weld pool to melt completely into a weld bead lying on the workpiece surface. By applying overlapping weld beads, a crack- and pore-free coating is achieved with a fine, homogeneous microstructure and a 100% density that is completely metallurgically bonded to the workpiece. Due to the low heat input and high process stability, laser cladding is a cost-effective way to extend the service life of business-critical parts with welded coatings, with layer thicknesses from 0.1 to a few millimeters.

Advantages of laser cladding

Due to the low heat input, high cooling rates and accurate process control, laser cladding offers major advantages:

  • A welded coating that will not detach from the workpiece;
  • Superior surface properties due to a fine, homogeneous microstructure and high-purity of the cladding;
  • Minimal distortion of the workpiece;
  • Minimal heat affection of the base metal so it retains its original properties;
  • The ability to laser clad traditional "non-weldable" materials.
Recycling and upcycling

Laser cladding offers the ability to extend the service life of industrial parts:

  • Surface enhancement of new parts;
  • Repair and improvement of damaged parts.
